Offensive Philosophy
By Shane Dreiling
Our individual and team offensive rules are successful when each player concentrates on each possession on
taking care of the ball,
execution, and unselfish team play. We are an attacking offense that likes to go after the defense in a simple in and out philosophy. Look inside for a teammate and kick back outside for a teammate. We look to fast break at every opportunity and always take the high percentage shot. We determine the outcome of the game. We must believe in the system, our players and ourselves as coaches.
Offensive Objectives
- Handle the ball with sureness.
- Breakdown the defense by pushing the ball, hitting the first open man, cuts, screens, drives and communication.
- Put the ball in the lane.
- Utilize transition, post play, drive, cutters and offensive rebounds.
- Shot discipline.
- We take the shots we want; not what the defense wants. We take rhythm shots. We emphasize lay-ups, straight line drives and uncontested jump shots.
- Board coverage
- 3 to glass (2 on 1 weakside), 1 fullback, and 1 halfback every time.
- We make more free throws than our opponents attempt.
Offensive Principles
- ATTACK the defense, whether in half court or fullcourt situations. Get to the foul line.
- ROLE DEFINITION: Know who you are. Handle ball with sureness. Hit the first open man. Jump stops and easy passes. We take great shots.
- SPRINT FLOOR, PITCH AHEAD, RUN WIDE
- CATCH IN TRIPLE THREAT. Eyes on Rim, Post, Action. Be a threat to score.
- MOVE WITHOUT THE BALL. Be hard to guard…read defender and create scoring opportunities for teammates. Move with a purpose. Maintain proper spacing.
- POST MUST: Show hands, show numbers, call for ball.
- When SCREENING, head hunt the defender, set the screen and communicate all screens.
- Post players are always looking to seal (DOLEAC) their defensive man. This is option number one at all times.
- Always know the TIME AND SCORE.
- DRIBBLE with your head up and see the court. Protect the ball. Don’t waste your dribble.
- Make the SAFE and EASY pass. Don't force passes. No one-handed passes. Remember to always acknowledge the passer after you score.
- Make the JUMP STOP your weapon.
- THIRD SIDE INSIDE.
- CRACK BACK against traps.
- BALL SCREENS are always an option. Pick & roll screener always goes to the basket.
- ANTICPATE and REBOUND all shots.
Zone Attack
- Look to run each possession.
- Be patient
- High Post / Short Corner
- Attack from back of zone
- Replace / crack back
- Pass fake, shot fake
- Reverse ball quickly…use the high post
- Penetrate and flash the gaps
- Screen the zone
- Utilize the skip pass to reverse the ball and then look inside.
- Wings flatten out when ball goes to high post.
- Shot discipline
- Attack the offensive boards
