Preventing Turnovers

By Shane Dreiling

I. Thumb Rules (define what we do)

  • Passing is a team skill.
  • Post players have to learn to play in a crowd.
  • The point guard determines our philosophy on the floor.
  • We design how how we are going to win or lose.
  • Discipline – make sure you are going in the same direction.
    • Three R’s
      • Roles
      • Responsibilities
      • Responsibility

Defensive Conversion – Zone or Man

  • Forcing the opponent to make mistakes without reaching and having to block shots. MAKE BODY STOPS.
  • Give your team fundamental concepts on defense. Each player should have an idea what they should do while defending.
    • Stop the ball from advancing.
    • Force the player to pick up the ball.
    • Obscure vision to pass.
    • Recover to new defense and on help and recover.

    Rules Which Govern Our Play

  • Don’t lock the floor by dribbling to dead spots.
  • Use swing pass and develop your post player.
  • Establish strong foot fakes and ball fakes on drives. Work hard on quickness.
  • Avoid fighting the defense unless necessary…Read and See.
  • Know and practice rule changes.
  • Repetitions on special situations on both offense and defense. Practice the end of the game first.
  • Use your turnover chart daily and end practice with a readout.

Notes:

  • We want our perimeter players to stay on their feet defensively when guarding the perimeter shot.
  • Catch the ball and attack the high foot.
