Transition Defense
Being successful in regards to transition defense comes down to one simple concept – don’t give up easy shots if you want to win big. For our program, we accomplish this by not giving up lay-ups and contesting all jump shots.
- Floor Balance
- Rebounding balance – What is our shape? 2-1-2, 3-1-1, or 3-2?
- We have to have a triangle on the offensive boards
- Point guard has deep back
- On point penetration, 2-guard has deep back
- Stop the Ball
- Pick up point is immediate
- Jam the rebounder
- Sprint Back
- Technique: Reverse pivot and find lane, OK to lose ball to find lane, 3 second sprint
- If a team gets up and down and doesn’t have to work – poor transition defense
- Guard sprints back at moment shot leaves shooter’s hand
- Who has the hole?
- Match Up
- Fill lanes
- If lane is empty, bump lane to find closest threat
- The post can’t beat us in transition
- Rotation
- If the ball beats you, rotate to the open player
- Dribble penetration that gets passed first defender is a help situation
- 1 guard picks up ball early – slow them down.
- 2 guard covers basket first then matches shooter as bigs cover basket.
- Contest All Shots
- High hands on closeout
- Get a hand in the shot pocket
- Rebound
- "ICE"
- Get to spots
- Drills
- 3 on 2, 2 on 1
- 5 on 2
