Worn by the women of Waterford up to the turn of the twentieth century, this glamorous hand-crafted cloak and hood is similar to the West Cork Cloak except the hood has twice the fabric in its make up and the front ruffle is gathered at its extreme front edge. The fully lined cloak is full and pleated into a large collar and fastened at the neck with an authentic large hook & eye with hand/arm openings in the front panels. The hood is detachable for cloak wear only. The hood looks lovely worn over and down the shoulders. Seen here in Blue Cashmere Blend with Blue Satin/Polyester lining. We offer made to measure outerwear, catering for all sizes from the very petite to the fuller figure. |

The Waterford Cloak and Hood | |||||||||||||
Blue is the colour that has traditionally been associated with the Waterford cloaks. Waterford which is known as the Deise County once housed one of the main weaving industry of Ireland. The luxurious hood of the Waterford cloak uses double the fabric that is needed for the West Cork (Kinsale) Hood. During our extensive research which involved numerous visits to libraries, Irish history museums, heritage centres and folklore experts we were not able to discover the definitive reason for using such a quantity of fabric in the hood of the Waterford cloak. If you have any information on this, we would be very interested to hear from you. To own a handcrafted replica of one of the traditional Irish cloaks gives you a real awareness of Irish history. The Renaissance Blue we use compliments all complexions and the hood is a very flattering shape to wear around the face. The hood on the Waterford cloak is detachable so this ornate hood can be replaced by another hood for day wear. As with all cloaks and capes the Waterford cloak is suitable for fuller figures, average and even petite sizes. Plus sizes are catered for in both the menswear and ladies wear sections of our range. We use 100% wool, cashmere, velvets and tweeds to create a range of cloaks, capes, shawls and wraps that offers you something for every occasion. Our cloaks and capes, shawls and wraps are ideal for formal wear such as a trip to the theatre, opera or when attending a graduation or ball. They complete an outfit while providing great warmth and comfort. Remember that a cloak, cape, shawl or wrap could make great Christmas presents. This handcrafted Irish cloak is often ordered by Divas to create a dramatic effect or grand entrance on stage. So if you want something different and something that will be noticed, then this is the cloak for you. |
