Defensive Goals
- Transition
baskets must be eliminated completely.
- Point
Guard sprints back at moment shot leaves shooter’s hand.
- Nearest
defender pressures rebounder, usually post player.
- Bigs
sprint back the moment the opponent controls the ball and outlets.
- 1
Guard picks up ball early. Slow
them down.
- Wings
cover lanes and protect basket first then match shooter as bigs cover
basket.
**Drop as many people as necessary
to completely stop break. We prefer 2
but will increase**
- Lay-ups
must be eliminated.
- Major
emphasis in defense is help. We
pressure ball others are in help.
- No
gambles. Should be 100% sure of
steal or deflection before you run through lane.
- Post
play side to side but must adjust behind on pass to assure people score
over the top of us.
- Second
shot must be eliminated.
- Emphasize
blockouts. War for the ball (i.e.
Michigan State, Oklahoma).
- FT’s
must be eliminated.
- Don’t
foul. Be in position. Don’t reach.
- Don’t
try to block shots. Hands
straight up.
**Make sure people make shots over
you with contest.**
- 3-point
shots must be eliminated.
- We
never give up a shot.
- Be
up under people so there is not comfort zone.
- Close
outs are hard to force ball on floor back into defense.
After 1-5, this leaves only scoring off their defense. So no turnovers.
And mid-range jumpers which is often the thing people work
on least.
If you eliminate 1-5 or at least limit those kinds of
baskets, you will be a defensive leader at your level and a big winner with
adequate offense.
