10 Tips to Management

From “Be Quick – But Don’t Hurry!” by Andrew Hill, with John Wooden
Simon and Schuster
March 2001

In BE QUICK-BUT DON'T HURRY!, Hill shares the secrets that he learned while participating in UCLA's extraordinary run of ten national championships in ten years. Among the lessons are:

Be Quick-But Don't Hurry

Life, like basketball, must be played fast-but never out of control. As Coach Wooden always said: "If you hurry, you're more likely to make mistakes; but if you're not quick, you won't get things done."

The Team with the Best Players Almost Always Wins

Talent can be measured in many ways, and it is VITAL that you prioritize so you know who will give you the best chance to succeed.

Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail

Creating time for preparation and organization is the real key to organizational efficiency. By planning ahead and allowing yourself time to be prepare, you will avert many crises that often come with management.

The Team That Makes the Most Mistakes…WINS!

There is no such thing as 'mistake-free' life. The important thing to do is to learn from your mistakes.

Concentrate on YOUR Team, Not the Opposition

Don't be afraid to buck the trends. Concentrate on building your team's ability instead of conforming to others' strategies.

A Good Leader Is First, and Foremost, a Teacher

A leader's greatest gift is not what they teach you, but that they teach you how to learn. As a leader, one must be patient, never assume job skills, offer simple explanations, and insist on repetition so that good habits are ingrained.

Balance is EVERYTHING

Without balance, there is no control. When a manager has true balance, employees know that there is strength and vision at the head of the organization.

Great Leaders Give Credit to Others, but Accept Blame Themselves

"Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Character is what you really are; reputation is what you are perceived to be."

Keep It Simple

The strong leader who is secure enough to give simple instructions and trust his followers' abilities to implement them will almost always come out ahead. RESIST the urge to over-lead.

A Great Leader Cannot Worry About Being Well Liked

A strong leader must realize that it is impossible to make everyone happy. One must stick to their beliefs to ensure the outcome of the task.
