Offensive Fundamentals
- Correct form when shooting (arc, elbows, power from legs, feet together)
- Swiping ball after receiving pass
- Triple threat position
- Ball fake, jab step
- Spin dribble, between legs dribble, crossover, behind the back dribble
- Arm out when dribbling, ball low, body low
- Pick and roll play (rolling correctly and picking correctly)
- Feeding the post with a bounce pass or lob pass
- Post moves and powering ball up
- Fundamental passing (when and where…no passes at ankles…. always look to catch ball)
- Recognizing when you can beat your defender.
- Passing out of a double team or finding open person (Crouching down or stepping around to pass)
- Dribbling with eyes up
- Coming to the ball on a pass
- Correct form on lay-ups…body control lay-ups…. jump stop, then jump sideways
- Jump stops
- Pivoting (weight on ball of foot)
- CLA (Catch – Look – React) Catch the ball, Look up, React to defense)
- Concentration, focus, intensity, competitiveness
- Making contact with defense when they the defense are out of position or not set (need a drill for this)
- Driving by defenders by staying low and then powering ball up
- Offensive rebounding, recognize where the ball is coming off of the rim, everyone crashing boards
- Reverse lay-ups
- 1 handed rebounding
- Grabbing the ball and chinning it after a steal or a rebound
Defensive fundamentals
- Correct stance (low and wide) (arms up, out, or down)
- Switching, when to switch
- Talking on defense…especially in traps
- Never giving up baseline
- Boxing out (seal offensive player and attack the ball)
- Stepping on sideline in press…trapping in press…rotating, going for the ball
- Stealing the long pass…playing passing lanes
- How to swipe at ball…start with hands low and swipe up
- Palms always up in defensive stance (less tendency to slap down and reach)
Always moving feet in defensive stance, even if it is just jumping side to side…. approach with a shuffle step
