Preventing Turnovers

By Shane Dreiling, TeamArete.com

I.                    Thumb Rules (define what we do)

a.     Passing is a team skill.

b.     Post players have to learn to play in a crowd.

c.      The point guard determines our philosophy on the floor.

d.     We design how how we are going to win or lose.

e.     Discipline – make sure you are going in the same direction.

                                                              i.      Three R’s

1.      Roles

2.      Responsibilities

3.      Responsibility

II.                    Defensive Conversion – Zone or Man

a.     Forcing the opponent to make mistakes without reaching and having to block shots.  MAKE BODY STOPS.

b.     Give your team fundamental concepts on defense.  Each player should have an idea what they should do while defending.

                                                              i.      Stop the ball from advancing.

ii.      Force the player to pick up the ball.

                                                          iii.      Obscure vision to pass.

iv.      Recover to new defense and on help and recover.

III.                    Rules Which Govern Our Play

a.     Don’t lock the floor by dribbling to dead spots.

b.     Use swing pass and develop your post player.

c.      Establish strong foot fakes and ball fakes on drives.  Work hard on quickness.

d.     Avoid fighting the defense unless necessary…Read and See.

e.     Know and practice rule changes.

f.        Repetitions on special situations on both offense and defense.  Practice the end of the game first.

g.     Use your turnover chart daily and end practice with a readout.

Notes:

·        We want our perimeter players to stay on their feet defensively when guarding the perimeter shot.

·        Catch the ball and attack the high foot.
