GUIDELINES FOR A GOOD BALL COACH
- Treat all player's fairly;
the way they deserve to be treated.
- After chewing out a player, say something positive to
bring him back tomorrow.
- Support your players every chance you have.
- If you must criticize them, do it to a player's face
not downtown, or to the media. End all criticism with something positive.
- Try to make all your player's
feel important.
- Stimulate your player's to be the best they can be.
- Stay in control; don't lose your temper or emotions.
- Coach, coach, and coach some more before you
criticize.
- What your player's learn is what's most important, not
what you know.
- Your practice plans are very important. Know what
you're doing each practice.
- Enthusiasm is contagious. Practice this everyday.
- Fundamentals are the most important factor you can
teach.
- Coaches should never argue with or criticize another
coach in front of another.
- Be concerned about injuries to all player's.
- Don't ever allow any player to loaf, no matter who he
is.
- Don't ever threaten a player or team unless you plan
to back it up.
- Encourage and demand that your player's do well in
their academic work.
- Make the game fun for all your players.
- Do not berate the referees.
- Don't ever use foul language in front of your
player's.
- Be willing to suspend or remove a star player if he is
disruptive to the team.
- Always be open to new ideas and techniques that can
make your player and team more successful.
- Be sure to listen to your player's and maintain a
balance between being a friend and the boss.
- If you have been a good coach, your former players
will stay in touch and will feel comfortable and appreciated around your
current player's.
- Honesty is the centerpiece of a coach-player
relationship.
- Your priorities should be God, your family, and then
your team.
- If you are a good coach, your player's will play very
close to how you teach them to play.
- Good teams get better as the season progresses and
their ability, commitment, and confidence grows
stronger.
- When things are going good, you must stay on their
butt to improve everyday. When things are going bad, you need to lighten
up a little.
- Your favorite player should be the most
well-conditioned and the most unselfish player on the team.
